Arena to cook on gas in 2010
19 March 2010
Arena Motorsport has confirmed that it will run its Ford Focus STs on LPG for the 2010 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.
The team entered the Focus for the first time last season under the Team Aon banner and picked up three podium finishes in the latter stages of the campaign after mid-season development of the car saw a notable improvement in performance.
Pre-season testing in Spain had seen the team run the LPG engine back-to-back with the petrol unit used last year, but it has now taken the decision to run on alternative fuel for the year ahead.
It will make Team Aon the first outfit to run on LPG since the 2004 campaign, when John George made his BTCC debut with Mardi Gras Motorsport running a Honda Civic and a Peugeot 406 Coupe on the fuel.
Team Aon will also welcome onboard Auto Windscreens as a new sponsor for the season ahead, while Tom Onslow-Cole is confirmed in the second seat alongside Tom Chilton.
“We are looking forward to a competitive season with new Calor powered Ford Focus,” team boss Mike Earle said, “and we are delighted to welcome Auto Windscreens onboard for an exciting new partnership for a thrilling new season of racing.
"I think we're in great shape going into this new season. We have looked at every aspect of the Focus and taken what was already a very good car and improved it. The decision to run LPG was a logical one, but it has presented us with additional challenges. Our aim is to produce the most competitive package possible and along with the engine and chassis developments, we also need talented drivers. In Tom Chilton and Tom Onslow-Cole, we have that as well.
"We had hoped to run three cars, but the technical complexities we have had to overcome, we will start the season with just two entries and look to run a third car later in the year. I'm very excited about this coming season and whilst winning any championship is never easy, I believe it is a realistic goal for Team Aon."
