Team Aon was left to rue a gamble on tyres during the opening race of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship weekend at Rockingham.

Tom Chilton qualified on pole position at the wheel of his LPG-powered Ford Focus with team-mate Tom Onslow-Cole in fourth, but the team made a wrong call on tyres for the opening race - putting both drivers on a mix of dry and wet rubber due to the damp conditions.

Both drivers suffered trips onto the grass and while Onslow-Cole battled to eighth place, Chilton elected to pit for slick tyres and dropped to eleventh at the finish.

While Chilton took sixth, just ahead of Onslow-Cole in race two, he was then forced out of race three after going off on the opening lap while fighting with the BMW of Mat Jackson.

Onslow-Cole ran third before running wide at Deene on the final lap and had to settle for seventh leaving team boss Mike Earle to reflect on what might have been.

"Here at Rockingham I think we have proved that our cars have good pace, but unfortunately we didn't make the best use of it during the races," he said. "We're looking forward to the races at Brands Hatch next weekend which will give us an opportunity quite quickly to put that right. I think our package has huge potential at Brands and I'm expecting some very strong results.

"The highlight of this weekend was obviously Tom Chilton's pole on Saturday which has proved the whole concept of the LPG project we've undertaken."
