Jordan edges Plato at Rockingham

Andrew Jordan tops the times in BTCC testing at Rockingham
Andrew Jordan edged out Jason Plato to post the quickest time during an official Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship test at Rockingham yesterday [Tuesday].

Jordan posted a quickest time of 1min 23.886secs during the morning session at the wheel of his Pirtek Racing Vauxhall Vectra, and although he was unable to go quicker during the afternoon, the 21-year-old was able to edge out Jason Plato's Silverline Chevrolet Cruze for the fastest time of the day.

Plato, who was the only person to lap below 1min 24secs during the afternoon (and one of only three all day), ended up just 0.001secs slower.

“We came here with some set-up tweaks in mind, stuff we've never tried before, and they've transformed the car,” Jordan told the official series website BTCC.net. “The handling is phenomenal through the mid-high speed corners – we've got rid of the understeer on turn-in – and that bodes well for the BTCC's next round at Oulton Park as there are some similar sections there. The changes we've made also make the car kinder on its tyres. I'm delighted with today.”

James Nash was third quickest for Triple Eight at the wheel of the Vectra he raced for the first time in the Rockingham races earlier this year with Matt Neal – who sits level on points with Plato in the championship standings – finishing up fourth.

Alex MacDowall was fifth in the second Chevrolet ahead of the first of the Fords in the hand of Tom Chilton, with Daniel Lloyd an impressive seventh on his BTCC bow in Triple Eight's Vectra.

“It's been an absolutely fantastic experience,” he said. “Obviously I want to thank Ian Harrison (team principal) and everyone at Triple Eight for giving me such a great car to drive – the level of professionalism is incredible. The Vectra is amazing, it's very much like a bigger version of a Clio, with more speed and more grip, so I felt very comfortable.

“The day was brilliant, I'm really happy with my performance but I know we could have been quicker still as I made a mistake at turn six so lost some time there. To be within 0.3 seconds of the top of the times though is something I didn't expect! It'd be unbelievable to be able to race in the BTCC.”

Gordon Shedden was eighth quickest ahead of James Thompson, who shared Neal's car during the afternoon to aid the team with development work.

Tom Onslow-Cole was tenth, with David Pinkney, Arthur Forster, Martin Depper and Paul O'Neill also in action – the latter driving both sunshine.co.uk cars during the day.
