Chilton tops opening session
5 June 2010
Tom Chilton set the pace as the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship weekend at Oulton Park kicked off.
The Team Aon driver set a time of 1min 27.914secs to edge out the Honda of Gordon Shedden by just 0.025secs in the team's first weekend running with engine restrictions on the LPG-powered Ford Focus.
A late lap from Rob Collard saw him go third for West Surrey Racing and quickest of the BMW drivers in third place as he looks to secure his first win of the year, with Mat Jackson fourth. Points leader Matt Neal was fifth despite carrying maximum ballast on his car – which is 36kg this weekend thanks to the fact that Neal shares the points lead with Jason Plato.
Tom Onslow-Cole was sixth quickest in the second of the Fords, with Alex MacDowall ahead of team-mate Plato, Andy Neate and James Nash rounded out the top ten, Neate setting the same time as Plato in his most impressive session of the season to date.
Local drivers Tom Boardman and Paul O'Neill were eleventh and 13th – split on the times by Andrew Jordan – with O'Neill losing some time in the session when he had to crawl back to the pits on three wheels after one came away from his sunshine.co.uk Honda.
Elsewhere, David Pinkney was 15th despite dislocating his shoulder last weekend in an incident at home where he tripped over a Labrador dog while playing rounders.
Martin Johnson endured a difficult start to the weekend as an issue with his brakes left him to complete just a single sighter lap. Johnson is racing at Oulton Park in memory of his father – and Boulevard team principal - Clive, who died suddenly last weekend.
