Tom Chilton posted the quickest time as the fifth round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship season kicked off at Croft.

The Team Aon driver left it until the final moment of the session to dip below the lap record with a lap of 1min 25.685secs at the wheel of his Ford Focus ST, despite light rain starting to fall at the circuit in the closing moments of the session.

Chilton's time prevented Steven Kane from topping the times for Airwaves BMW as he ended up 0.396secs behind in second place, with Andrew Jordan third for Pirtek Racing as he looks to forget his disastrous weekend at Oulton Park.

Rob Collard was fourth fastest for West Surrey Racing ahead of the Honda of Paul O'Neill - another man seeking to bounce back from a tough weekend at Oulton a fortnight ago.

Gordon Shedden was sixth ahead of the top two in the standings, with Jason Plato seventh and Matt Neal eighth.

Tom Boardman was the only driver to run into major problems during the session after an oil leak on his SEAT Leon, although a number of his rivals suffered spins on track, including Jordan, Andy Neate and John George.
