Onslow-Cole: Croft a bitter sweet weekend
26 June 2010
Tom Onslow-Cole has moved into the lead of the 2010 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship Independents Trophy points standings after three strong points-scoring finishes at Croft last weekend.
The Team Aon Ford man was robbed of a solid fourth place with an electrical glitch on his liquefied petroleum gas-powered Focus during the opening race of the weekend in North Yorkshire, but nevertheless managed to battle back to bring the car home in eighth place.
He then followed that up by taking fifth place in the second 15-lapper, before scoring an impressive second place in the last reversed-grid race of the weekend. That result was his fifth podium finish in the last nine BTCC outings.
“It has been a bitter sweet weekend,” said the 23-year-old. “I know the car was quick and we had our small problem in race one which ruled us out of a challenge for the podium. That was heartbreaking but you have to say that we fought back well and I am still in the fight for the overall title.
“I am happy to have moved into the lead of the Independents standings but I have my eyes on the main prize this season. Both Matt Neal and Jason Plato had problems in the third race and the gap to them is the same as it was coming in to the meeting. I haven't lost ground, which is positive.”
The BTCC now has a seven-week break until the next races at Snetterton in Norfolk on August 7/8, and Onslow-Cole says the Aon team will be working hard to improve his hatchback racer even further.
“We know we have great qualifying pace and that is encouraging, but we are going to look at how to get even more out of the car over the course of the races,” he added.
“It is a challenge for everyone at Team Aon but we have the time to have a really good look at our performances and improve. I can't wait for the second half of the championship.”
