Matt Neal has called for a change to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship rules after a weekend that saw him lose the points lead at Snetterton.
The Honda driver went into the weekend leading Jason Plato by eight points, but left the Norfolk circuit 20 points down on his rival having managed just one podium finish from the weekend.
Neal qualified seventh with maximum ballast on his car but his hopes of points in the first race of the weekend were ended when he suffered a puncture in the closing stages and was forced to retire.
Having finished ninth in race two, Neal ran in second place for much of the final race before being demoted to third on the final lap by Rob Collard – with a double win for Plato moving him ahead of Neal in the standings.
Although surprised by the pace of Plato's Chevrolet, it was the speed of the Team Aon Ford Focus that gave Neal greatest cause for concern and he was quick to call for changes to peg back the LPG-powered machines.
“We were on the back foot right from the start of the meeting,” he said. “We didn't have the pace of the turbocharged cars in the championship – which I think need to be pegged back by the series officials to give us all a level playing field for all the different types of car – and I was also carrying 45 kilogrammes of success ballast into the meeting.
“To be able to salvage a third place was a bonus, but the rules need to change to give us all a chance. The Honda Racing Team has got some tweaks up its sleeve ahead of Silverstone in two weeks time but I am not sure it is going to be enough to keep up with the turbocharged cars.
“We have tracks that will suit us coming up in the rest of the schedule and we just need to make sure we maximise our scores when we can to keep the title fight on track.”
