Three stars of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship have helped select the winner of the Dunlop Race Academy, who will make his racing debut this weekend at Donington Park.
Airwaves BMW pair Steven Kane
and Mat Jackson, as well as Team Aon's Tom Chilton, helped select the finalists for the finale at Silverstone, which was won by Kent motoring enthusiast Simon Clark.
The 36-year-old will now make his racing debut at the wheel of a Nissan 370Z in the latest round of the Dunlop Sport Maxx Cup at Donington, scene of a dramatic penultimate round of the BTCC season last weekend.
“The adrenaline hasn't stopped pumping since my name was read out as the winner,” he said. “I cannot wait for the weekend. It's a great prize from Dunlop and I just hope I can do the mantle of Dunlop Race Academy Champion justice. Driving at high speed on your own is one thing – lining up on the starting grid against 20 other drivers with race experience is going to be quite a different sensation!
“The tension in the room when they invited us back in to find out who had won was unbearable – it was like being in the final of X Factor! When my name was read out it was surreal. I always felt I could do quite well but to actually win exceeds any expectations.”
Dunlop's Race Academy is part of its extensive support of motorsport in the UK, which includes acting as official tyre supplier and title sponsor of the BTCC.
