Onslow-Cole stays in the hunt

Tom Onslow-Cole to fly the flag for Team Aon in the BTCC title race after Donington Park weekend
Team Aon's hopes of lifting the 2010 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship title now rest with Tom Onslow-Cole after Tom Chilton was knocked out of contention following the penultimate rounds of the season at Donington Park.

Both drivers went into the Donington weekend in contention for the title, but despite finishing the opening race in second place, Chilton was unable to secure the points need to remain in the race for the crown at Brands Hatch.

Onslow-Cole meanwhile suffered in the opening race when he was caught up in the multi-car incident at Goddards mid-way through the race, although he brought his damaged car to the finish in eighth place.

A fine drive to victory followed in race two before his ballast-laden Focus took the flag in ninth in race three, which means he will go into Finals Day 24 points behind leader Jason Plato in the title race.

“The first race was a struggle, one nudge and we went backwards from P1,” he said, having led the race in the early stages. “In the end I was quite happy to get the car home as we sustained quite a lot of damage. Race two was a fantastic result, one of my wins coming through from eighth.

“Sadly we couldn't end the day on another high as the success ballast meant we struggled with the car in race three. We're 24 points behind Jason now going into the finale, which is do-able, but as always it will be very tough!”

Team boss Mike Earle admitted that the team had hoped for more from the Donington weekend having locked out the front row of the grid, but said the Ford outfit would be giving its all to ensure it ends the season on top of the standings.

“It was a weekend of mixed fortunes and we are slightly disappointed,” he said. “Having had both cars on the front of the grid from qualifying, we didn't quite get the points haul we had hoped for. Onslow-Cole's win was obviously the highlight of the day.

“This weekend has demonstrated that we still have some work to do on the set-up of the car when it is carrying success ballast. The Brands Hatch finale will be what it will be, we'll go there and give it our best shot, the car was strong there at the start of the season and so fingers crossed we can push Jason all the way to the end.”

Team Aon also sits a close second to Dynamics/Honda in the manufacturers'/constructors' title race.
