Neal: Second not enough

Matt Neal misses out on a third BTCC title at Brands Hatch
Matt Neal admitted that second place in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship standings wasn't enough after he missed out on a third title at Brands Hatch.

Neal went into the weekend sitting second in the standings behind Jason Plato but found himself giving chase to the Chevrolet driver throughout practice and qualifying.

Having finished third in the opening race of the weekend, Neal went into race two aware of the fact that he needed to beat Plato to keep the championship alive but a second win for Plato saw him crowned champion for a second time.

Although a mechanical issue forced Neal's Honda out of the third race after the opening lap, the points scored were good enough for second place even though the most experienced man on the grid admitted he had wanted more.

“Usually you would be delighted to have finished second in a championship but it isn't enough for us,” he said. “We are winners and that is what we always want to do but we were up against a team with huge budget.

“It has been a great year for Honda and we have had some great successes so it is nice to reward the boys who work so hard on the car with a trophy. I gave it everything I had got at Brands Hatch and drove my heart out but it just didn't work out for me to overhaul Plato.

“For us the work never stops. We have already started thinking about next year's challenge and how we can take a clean sweep of all the trophies. This week is the first week of our 2011 programme and we can't wait to get stuck in to it.”

While Neal may have missed out on the title, Honda/Dynamics secured the Manufacturers/Constructors title ahead of Ford/Aon.
