Kane misses out on Indy title

Steven Kane falls just two points short of taking the BTCC Independents' title at Brands Hatch
Steven Kane came close to securing his first title in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship after falling just points short of clinching the 2010 Independents' crown.

Kane went into the final round fighting against Tom Onslow-Cole and Tom Chilton for the title, with the battle going into the 30th and final race of the year.

The Airwaves BMW driver produced a fine drive in the season finale to finish second behind the Pirtek Vauxhall Vectra of Andrew Jordan, although third place for Chilton behind was enough to deny him the title.

While disappointed to miss out on the championship, Kane was able to console himself with the fact that he ends the season as the highest placed BMW driver having taken his maiden victory in the opening rounds of the year at Thruxton back in April.

“We didn't quite have the pace in the last race to edge Andy but the car was good,” he said. “Against a turbo charged engine we're struggling on the straights, but that is that and I didn't quite make it. All the podiums I've had this year and being the top BMW driver means a lot to me.

“It's fantastic to be back and I'd like to be here next year. I would like to thank all my sponsors, Airwaves BMW, Leyland Paints and The Money Shop, Hanford Sensors and LTI.”

Team-mate Mat Jackson had missed out on a podium finish in the opening race when he made a mistake at Surtees and suffered a spin over the grass, although he battled back to pressurise Chilton for the final place on the podium in race three.

Had Jackson been able to make a move stick, it could have aided Kane in his title challenge although he was unable to find a way ahead of the Ford and ended his season with a fourth place finish.

“I made a mistake in the first race and that cost me a podium at the very least, then in race two I made contact with Boardman and that ended up damaging my steering and geometry, so that race was a struggle too,” he said. “Race three was entirely different and it all fell into place.

"Had the safety car not appeared I think I would have had the time and passed Chilton and that would have changed everything. I'm frustrated but that's racing, I'm not sure this years championship has favoured the BMW but next year I'll be back and fighting again.”
