9 – Fabrizio Giovanardi
It might seem weird to include Fabrizio Giovanardi in a list of the top ten BTCC drivers of the year, given the fact that his campaign came to an end just three races into a 30 race season.
However, Giovanardi's performance at Thruxton showed why he is such a class act and why he was such a loss to the series when the debacle surrounding sponsor Uniq left him unable to continue with Triple Eight. How many times does a sponsor pull out after getting too much
A double win in the season opener left Giovanardi with 38 points and left him 14th in the standings, but the fact that makes his performance such a stand out one is the points tally of the man who would ultimately come in to replace him. James Nash took over Giovanardi's drive at Rockingham and would end the season having scored just 14 points more.
Thruxton may well have been Giovanardi's swansong in the BTCC and if it was, what a way to go…
