8 – Tom Chilton
Unfortunately for Tom Chilton, his performance in securing the BTCC Independents title was overshadowed somewhat in 2010 by the team orders debacle, which affected Team Aon at Silverstone.
That weekend saw him take two of his three victories during the season at the wheel of his LPG-powered Ford Focus, with the first having coming at Brands Hatch earlier in the season. He should have won twice on the GP loop, but failed post-race checks after winning race two and was excluded from the results.
If points were handed out for qualifying, then Chilton would have ended the season higher than fifth in the overall standings as he took pole for four of the ten meetings. However, only at Brands Hatch could be convert that into a race win, with Rockingham in particular being a race where the chance of victory was thrown away by a wrong tyre choice on the grid.
Although he clinched the Independents title on the final weekend of the season, Chilton should have ended the season higher in the standings and the fact that he managed just seven podium finishes ultimately meant he dropped out of title contention.
There is little doubt that Chilton has the speed – he just needs the consistency.
