2 – Tom Onslow-Cole
Given the chance to return to the BTCC full-time in 2010, Tom Onslow-Cole took the opportunity handed to him with both hands – and he deserved better than fourth in the standings at the end of the year.
His year didn't start well with just 15 points from the first six races of the season but things took a turn for the better when he secured his first podium of the year and then his first win on the Brands Hatch GP circuit – although the latter was after the exclusion of team-mate Tom Chilton.
A further win at Oulton Park and consistent points finishes saw Onslow-Cole move up the standings but his hopes of a maiden title weren't helped at Silverstone when he team orders saw him twice hand victory to Chilton. An emotional victory in the final race at Silverstone was followed by a fine drive to the top step of the podium at Donington to leave Onslow-Cole one of four contenders for the title on Finals Day.
That he failed to finish any of the three races was a cruel way to end his year as it also saw him lose the lead of the Independents' championship. However, during the course of the year, Onslow-Cole certainly showed he is more than capable of challenging for honours.
