Hines: I have unfinished BTCC business

24 January 2011

Former Vauxhall and SEAT works driver Luke Hines insists he has 'unfinished business' in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship after revealing he has been approached about a possible return to the series in 2011.

Hines clinched the Production Class title in 2003 before joining Vauxhall for 2004 and won twice at the wheel of an Astra Coupe before joining forces with Jason Plato at SEAT the following year – adding another race victory to his resume at the wheel of a Super 2000 spec Toledo.

Since then, Hines has gone on to forge a career in sportscars having raced in a range of series – including British GT, Grand Am and the American Le Mans Series – but could yet return to a championship where he feels he has plenty still to offer.

“There is some interest for 2011 from a team in FIA GT1 that would excite me quite a bit – it is a very interesting option,” he said. “But funnily enough, there is also interest from touring cars and there could be a return there. I feel I have unfinished business in touring cars and I think I left a bit early to go to British GT and didn't really prove myself enough.

“The change from touring cars to sportscars was difficult at first, but I feel it has made me a better driver. I would love to do both FIA GT1 and touring cars this year and it would be a real highlight if I could do that, but it is difficult at the moment with money as you don't have the big sponsors backing teams anymore.

“Hopefully my deal will be done shortly and I believe it will either be in FIA GT1 or in the BTCC.”
