Hamilton Jr enters Clio Cup UK
18 February 2011
Nicolas Hamilton, the younger brother of McLaren F1 driver, is to make his competitive race debut in the BTCC-supporting Renault Clio Cup.
The 19-year-old will compete for Total Control Racing as he launches his own career and is the second driver to sign up with the team after it previously confirmed the signing of James Dixon.
Hamilton, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, has already secured the necessary race licence and will now go into a testing programme before the season-opener at Brands Hatch in April.
“I have loved motor sport from a young age and watching my brother achieve so much has given me inspiration to make my own racing debut,” Hamilton said. “I know this will not be an easy task, but I hope that my doing this will give inspiration to others who have challenges in their life. I can't wait to be racing.”
The deal was brokered by father Anthony Hamilton, with TCR boss Lee Brookes delighted to have the teenager onboard for the year ahead.
“Obviously it's fantastic for the team to be running Nicolas in his first season in the sport,” Brookes, himself a former racer, said. “As Lewis' brother, it's guaranteed he'll attract a lot of attention in the paddock throughout the year but we're confident he'll make good progress and become a very quick racer in his own right.
“It goes without saying how delighted we are to have agreed terms with Nicolas and his father Anthony and can't wait now to get out there testing to prepare well for the new season. We've every confidence James will be challenging for the title this year and we can hopefully announce two more Clio signings in the coming weeks as well.”
