Collard tops Croft practice

Rob Collard quickest in BTCC practice at Croft
Rob Collard was the pace setter after free practice for the latest Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship rounds at Croft.

After a wet opening session, headed by Alex MacDowall's Chevrolet, times tumbled in session two with drivers able to switch to slick tyres before the chequered flag flew.

Collard emerged quickest ahead of the Honda of Gordon Shedden as a BMW topped the times for the first time this year, with the pair being the only drivers to lap below the 1min 27sec marker. Tom Boardman was third fastest in his SEAT with the top six completed by Mat Jackson, James Nash and Andrew Jordan.

Matt Neal, MacDowall and Jason Plato failed to set representative times having used the second – quicker – session to focus on scrubbing in tyres for qualifying and race day.

There were a number of incidents in the two sessions, with Boardman, Dave Newsham and Jeff Smith amongst those to go off in FP1 and Frank Wrathall and Paul O'Neill suffering spins in FP2. Wrathall lost his windscreen during his spin at the chicane which briefly brought out the red flag.

Wrathall's NGTC rival Rob Austin impressed in both sessions, going twelfth quickest in FP1 in his Audi before ending the second session with the seventh quickest time. Austin had briefly run as high as second.

Waiting to watch qualifying on ITV.com but it looks like the drivers are too scared to go out in the the rain. Look on youtube for "jim clark at crystal palace" to see how these Pu55ies compare to the heroes of yesteryear.
