Shedden storms into contention

Gordon Shedden shines at Snetterton with another win boosting BTCC title hopes
Gordon Shedden admitted that three points scores at Snetterton could be vital to his chances of securing a maiden Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship title after ending the Snetterton weekend second in the standings.

The Honda driver went into the weekend seeking to strengthen his championship position ahead of his home round at Knockhill next month and made a solid start to proceedings with third in the opening race.

The Scot then stormed to victory in race two to briefly head the championship standings before taking seventh in race three – despite a scare when he was handed a black and orange flag for a damaged front wing, which he managed to remove after brushing against a bale at the edge of the circuit.

The results mean Shedden sits eight points Mat Jackson in the standings ahead of the Knockhill meeting with the tough weekend suffered by team-mate Matt Neal being the only downside to proceedings.

“The championship has been so competitive this season that it is vital that you keep racking up the finishes,” he said. “You can't afford to drop behind, so coming away from this weekend with 30 points has been perfect. It is a shame that Matt had his problems, because otherwise we could have been first and second in the standings.

“After finishing third in the first race, I thought a victory might be on the cards in race two and I just concentrated on hitting the front as soon as I could. When the chance came at the second corner, I just grabbed it and it was pretty comfortable thereafter. The Civic has an excellent chassis and that meant that even though I had 27kgs of success ballast, I was still able to draw away as I pleased.”
