MacDowall makes WTCC switch
28 February 2012
Following RML's decision to shelve its Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship programme, Alex MacDowall has confirmed he will switch to the WTCC for the season ahead.
MacDowall, who had been linked with Motorbase Performance for 2012, will instead join former BTCC outfit Bamboo Engineering for a move onto the world stage.
The 21-year-old will drive one of the team's 1.6-litre turbocharged Chevrolet Cruzes, with touring car rookie Pasquale Di Sabatino.
“I'm absolutely delighted to be representing Bamboo Engineering in the WTCC this year,” MacDowall said. “It's great to be continuing my relationship with Chevrolet and I can't wait to drive the 1.6 turbo Cruze, it's a fantastic racecar and it's a dream come true being able to compete in the World Championship with such a great team.
“I really enjoyed my two years in the BTCC and I'll miss the fans, my supporters and the sponsors who helped me achieve the success and experience I gained there.
“Moving into the WTCC is a massive opportunity though and could be a major turning point for my career. We're aiming for some top results.”
MacDowall joins Tom Chilton, James Nash and Tom Boardman in moving to the WTCC for 2012, where they will join fellow Brits Rob Huff and James Thompson.
