Plato takes Donington pole

Jason Plato snares pole position at Donington Park for MG
Jason Plato secured pole position for the second round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Donington Park, despite his MG6 being laden with ballast thanks to his position as points leader.

Plato, winner of race three at Brands Hatch, set his best time early on the in the session and then stayed unbeaten out front as light rain prevented his rivals from bettering his benchmark.

“This is one of the most satisfying of all,” he said of his 36th career pole. “We knew the rain was coming so popped in a fast lap early on, but what a result for the team and this car.

“It is still very new to racing but we got a win out of it on its debut at Brands Hatch and it just gets better and better.”

Gordon Shedden was second quickest as he looks to bounce back from his tough weekend at Brands Hatch and was just 0.054secs down on Plato, while Matt Neal and Andrew Jordan share row two after NGTC cars locked out the top four places on the grid.

Rob Collard was fifth quickest having managed to improve late on as the circuit started to dry again while Mat Jackson, Dave Newsham and Rob Austin completed the top eight.

The session was briefly halted after Adam Morgan suffered a spin into the gravel at Redgate, leaving the Speedworks man down in 20th place, while Andy Neate was unable to set a time after a mechanical issue on his car meant he managed a slow lap straight back to the pits.

John Thorne meanwhile was well off the pace in his Vauxhall Insignia and has since announced via Twitter that he won't compete on race day.

Spot on Fatboyfat- if it were the other way round Plato would be bleating to the nearest camera crew, just like the other dozen times when the dice weren't in his favour...
