Shedden: I just floored it!

25 September 2012

Gordon Shedden admitted he was lucky to get away with a lurid slide in the second Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship race of the weekend at Rockingham.

Shedden suddenly found himself almost going backwards towards the wall in the early stages of the race when he lost the rear end of his Honda Civic on the turn one banking in heavy rain.

Astonishingly, Shedden was able to recover the slide and continue on his way, going on to secure victory in the race and adding a further win in race three to move into the championship lead.

The Scot however was quick to admit how lucky he was to get away with his dramatic slide, especially as fellow Honda driver Jeff Smith would later go into the wall at the same place.

“That is a proper big place to having a moment like that and if I had nine lives before then I've only got eight left now,” he told BTCC.net. “We're flat in sixth gear there and my day could have so easily ended up like Jeff Smith's did later on when he ended up hitting the wall very hard.

“All I remember is knocking it down into fifth gear and flooring the accelerator and it not coming round so then popping it into fourth and keeping my right foot buried to the floor and then it came back into line.”

Shedden now sits three points clear of team-mate Matt Neal in the standings but the Scot admitted it would be difficult for the team next time out at Silverstone on a circuit that is expected to favour rival Jason Plato.

“The results at Rockingham were unexpected because the rain came and worked in our favour,” he said. “On paper Silverstone is going be a tough hassle for us but we should be in much better shape on the Brands Grand Prix circuit. Silverstone, though, could be a really long weekend. Maybe we'll get some snow and we'll have to go and race somewhere else…”
