Stockton makes BTCC return

1 October 2012

Chris Stockton is to return to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship after inking a deal to drive the Thorney Motorsport Vauxhall Insignia for the final two rounds of 2012.

Stockton, who competed in the series from 2006 to 2008 with BTC Racing, will take part in a two-day test at Pembrey ahead of his return at Silverstone this weekend.

The 42-year-old has spent recent seasons competing in GT racing in Europe with a GT4-spec BMW M3 but has been evaluating a return to touring car competition for some time.

“I have always loved the BTCC and racing the Insignia this weekend represents a chance for me to get a good idea about exactly what the new Next Generation Touring Cars are all about,” he told BTCC.net. “It looks like an exciting time to join with the new regulations proving to be a great success.

“I am open-minded about which way to go with my plans to race in the category full time next year. I am open to discussion with teams for 2013, or we can run a car under the BTC Racing banner.

“The Insignia has shown signs of potential this season and I want to try and improve on its results by utilising two days of testing this week at Pembrey. I will be able to use the last two meetings to introduce the BTCC to my existing sponsor Ningbo, plus several Ningbo partners who love the idea of being involved with the BTCC.”

The Insignia last raced at Snetterton, where Tony Gilham took it into the points for the first time.
