Gilham acquires Thorney Insignias
16 October 2012
Tony Gilham has concluded a deal to purchase two NGTC-spec Vauxhall Insignias from the Thorney Motorsport team, which wil now be entered by his own Team HARD outfit for the 2013 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.
The first car, the same one that Gilham drove for two meetings under the Thorney Motorsport banner, will now be run by Team HARD for the first time in this weekend's season finale at Brands Hatch, with Gilham once again behind the wheel.
The car will be then be rebuilt over the off-season alongside the second Insignia, which will be completed during the winter having been started by Thorney this season.
“This is a very exciting chapter in Team HARD.'s history,” Gilham insisted. “Having driven the Insignia twice I am very confident there is a lot of potential in the car and, with the extra resources we have, we're really looking forward to seeing what we can wring from it both at Brands Hatch but also during testing in the off-season for 2013.
"Everybody wants to put their own stamp and mark on things which I'm sure people will see when we go to Brands Hatch. I'd also like to thank Prestige Performance Centre (PPCGB) who have been a long-term partner of ours and have played a key role in us securing the Insignias."
Thorney meanwhile is focused on returning to the series with a two-car Insignia team next year having already moved to secure the backing required for 2013.
“Its been a tough season for us in terms of racing but our plan was always to develop the car and make it available to other teams,” Thorney boss John Thorne said. “However securing top level partners for next season will allow us to actually race rather than just build race cars so I'm delighted, the BTCC is not the place to be with no budget, this year certainly taught us that.”
The Insignia will run alongside the team's S2000-based Honda Civic at Brands Hatch, with Aaron Williamson making his debut at the wheel of the ex-Gordon Shedden machine.
