Ginetta champion tries Speedworks Toyota

Ginetta Junior champion Charlie Robertson gets behind the wheel of a Speedworks Motorsport Toyota as part of his 2012 prize
Ginetta Junior Championship title winner Charlie Robertson has sampled a BTCC car for the first time after getting behind the wheel of a Speedworks Motorsport-run Toyota Avensis at Silverstone.

The chance to sample the car was part Robertson's prize for winning the title in the BTCC-support series last year, with his run in the car coming during the annual Ginetta media day ahead of the 2013 season.

The 16-year-old will move into the new BRDC Formula 4 series for this season but said his eyes were open on a possible touring car future after his run behind the wheel.

“It was a really good experience and the car didn't take too long to get used to,” he said, “The main thing for me was the size compared to what I've been used to in Ginetta Junior and to the Formula 4 single-seater I'll be racing this year. It's definitely a fast car and really good fun to drive.

“Compared to my first run in the F4 car last week, I think the BTCC car has similar power really but it has a lot of torque and is obviously much heavier. It's a serious bit of kit, that's for sure, and the run has given me a good insight into front-wheel drive and touring cars. Our focus is on single-seaters but this test has definitely shown me touring cars could be something to consider for the future.

“I'd definitely love the chance to have another run in a touring car at some point and I must say a massive thank you to Lawrence [Tomlinson – Ginetta Cars Chairman] and all the guys at Speedworks Motorsport for giving me such a fantastic opportunity.”

Fellow Ginetta runners Sennan Fielding and Niall Murray also spent time on track as a reward for their performances on track during the 2012 season.

“Genuinely, they blew me away,” Speedworks boss said of the trio. “They were a credit to the Ginetta Junior Championship - each of them jumped in the Toyota and drove sensibly and within themselves and with impressive pace. We didn't even have a single spin. Each had 20 minutes at the wheel and would, I am sure, have gone even quicker given more time.”
