BTCC Thruxton 2013: Neal hits the front

8 May 2013

Matt Neal moved to the top of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship standings thanks to a double win as the series headed to Thruxton for the third round of the yar.

Neal's two wins included his 50th in the series, making him only the third driver after Jason Plato and Andy Rouse to complete a half century of BTCC victories.

For almost all of the opening race, it looked like Neal would be forced to wait for win #50 as he ran second behind fellow Honda driver Andy Jordan.

However, when Jordan suffered a puncture on the final lap, it allowed Neal through to secure the landmark success; a result he then repeated with a lights-to-flag win in race two.

Having been able to work his way up from ninth on the grid in race three, Neal took the flag second to cap a near perfect race day that allowed him to go top in the championship standings with a 13 point lead over Jordan ahead of the next round of the year at Oulton Park next month.

“You can't get much better than this!” he said. “The 50th win feels as sweet as the first one all those years ago. It's hard to explain just how stoked I am – it's absolutely awesome! I didn't expect one win to be honest, never mind two.

“I love Thruxton – it's unspoilt and it's completely flat out. It's not usually a happy hunting ground for me to be honest – unlike places like Brands Hatch or Donington for example – so to get the wins and a 1-2-3 for Honda in the final race is fantastic for the championship.”
