Mason hopes for more after debut
13 June 2013
Aaron Mason says he would welcome the chance to appear in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship again later this season after making his debut in the series at Oulton Park.
Mason joined the AmDTuning.com team for the fourth meeting of the year in place of the unavailable James Kaye, with the opening practice session of the weekend marking the first time he had got behind the wheel of the team's S2000-spec VW Golf.
The current Volkswagen Racing Cup points leader qualified third amongst the Jack Sears Trophy runners and took third in race one before a strong start in race two saw him challenging towards the front of the S2000 pack.
However, engine failure – caused by a wrong gear at Lodge - forced Mason to pull off before the half-way point, with the team also forced to withdraw from the final race of the weekend as a result.
Despite the disappointment, Mason said he was pleased with the way his weekend had gone and said he would love the chance to return to the series again before the end of the year.
"It's a shame the weekend ended as it did, but I'm pleased with how quickly I was able to adapt to the car and how quickly I was on the pace," Aaron said. "We made a few adjustments to the car to get it more to my liking and by the time we got to qualifying, I felt I was really up to speed.
"In the first race, the car didn't feel quite as good but the guys made some changes for race two and it felt a lot better in the laps we did. I think we were showing strong pace before the engine let go.
"I really enjoyed the weekend and working with the team, and I think I put in a good performance. It would be nice to get out again and give it another go later in the year if the chance arose."
Mason will now return to his VW Cup programme, with Kaye set to be back in the Golf for the next meeting of the year at Croft.
