Griffin hits out at debutant over clash

27 August 2013

Liam Griffin has hit out at debutant Kieran Gallagher after a clash in the final Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship race of the weekend at Knockhill.

Griffin went into the weekend seeking to try and end Lea Wood's run of success in the Jack Sears Trophy, with the Vauxhall driver having taken four straight wins to establish a five win lead in the battle for the crown; decided by virtue of the most race wins over the course of the year.

Griffin started the weekend well with class honours in race one and then repeated the feat in race two to take him up to six wins – just three shy of Wood's mark.

However, his hopes of a hat-trick were ended while leading the final race of the weekend when contact from Gallagher's NGTC-spec Vauxhall Insignia tipped him into a spin exiting the final corner and forced him into retirement.

With the Addison Lee Motorbase man watching on, Wood picked his tenth win of the year to go four wins clear heading into the next round of the year at Rockingham.

“Two great wins but still a disappointing end to what could have been a very, very good weekend,” he said. “I've had Lea behind me for the last three races and dealt with it fine but for Gallagher to come out and do that is just unnecessary.

“I would have been two points away from Lea and now I'm four, it just makes it a whole lot harder to close the gap and make the championship challenge at the end. Race three was there for the taking, but unfortunately Gallagher put paid to that. I'm a bit annoyed to be fair.”
