Top 10 BTCC Drivers of the Year 2013: 3: Rob Austin

Team: WIX Racing Car: Audi A4 Wins: 1 Podiums: 5 Pole Positions: 1 Fastest laps: 2 Championship points - Overall/Independents: 154/200 Championship position - Overall/Independents: 11th/9th

For Rob Austin, the 2013 season was one of highs and lows as the potential of his Audi A4 was finally realised - albeit not as often as the team boss would have liked.

Revisions to the car saw the engine moved further back and improved the handling, resulting in a podium finish in the first race of the year. However, having retired from race two, Austin was then involved in a huge accident with Dave Newsham in race three that left his car - dubbed 'Sherman' - extensively damaged.

With fan power helping to get the car repaired, Austin endured wretched luck at both Donington Park and Thruxton before switching to the TOCA engine at Oulton Park; where he returned to the top six.

Pole position at Knockhill, where there were two podium finishes, was followed by a maiden win at Rockingham although his season would end in disappointing fashion with just four points from the final two rounds.

Having given glimpses of what the Audi can do on track, Austin will now hope to add the consistency that has been missing so far when 2014 comes around.
