Brands Hatch: Ingram ecstatic after debut BTCC qualifying

Tom Ingram: To end up sixth on the grid with and only five previous champions ahead of us is more than we could have ever bargained for and hopefully we can carry this pace into the races.
Speedwork Toyota's Tom Ingram admitted his stunning run to sixth place in yesterday's BTCC qualifying at Brands Hatch was more than he expected.

The Speedworks rookie surprised everyone to line up sixth with only five previous and outgoing champions ahead of the Toyota while out-qualifying BTCC legends Alain Menu and Fabrizio Giovanardi in the process.

Ingram made the step up to the BTCC over the winter after clinching the Ginetta Supercup title last season.

“I think we achieved more than we expected,” Ingram told crash.net.

“The dream was to get into the top ten this weekend. Given what we have done during testing even with the work we have covered it's still not something we expected.

“To end up sixth on the grid with and only five previous champions ahead of us is more than we could have ever bargained for and hopefully we can carry this pace into the races.

“To mix it with the former champions and out-qualify Menu and Giovanardi is something I'm over the moon about.”

The 20-year old also paid testament to his Speedworks team, who he says has made the transition moving from the rear wheeled drive Ginetta's to the front wheel driven Avensis touring car an easier proposition.

“It's not been an easy jump out of a rear wheeled car and into a front one. But the team have made it so easy by not putting any pressure on me which is a nice position to be in.”
