BTCC legend Fabrizio Giovanardi says he and his Airwaves Racing squad are beginning to make more progress with their Ford Focus ahead of qualifying at Donington Park.

Giovanardi endured a difficult start to his much anticipated comeback campaign with a best finish of only ninth at the Brands season opener.

The Italian clocked the ninth quickest time during the second and final free-practice session ahead of qualifying later this afternoon.

Giovanardi said he was happier with his Airwaves machine but maintains the car still proves to be a handful on new rubber.

"Yes, I'm more comfortable with the car because we're starting to understand how the car reacts better after making changes to it," Giovanardi told crash.net

"We're able to produce better times but it's still not where we want to be. We still can't use the new tyres properly. The car comes in with a good balance on the older tyres but when we put the rubber on it becomes undriveable.

"The field is so close with the top 15 covered by a second, so to not gain on the new tyres makes things very difficult. I will be happy if can qualify within the top ten."

Giovanardi's Airwaves team mate Mat Jackson could fare no better than 15th position during two free-practice sessions.
