MG's Jason Plato took over from the BMW's early morning Oulton Park supremacy to announce himself as the man to beat ahead of BTCC's qualifying.
Although the two eBay BMW's of Colin Turkington and Rob Collard led most of the damp session again Plato produced his best to go half a second quicker with ten minutes of practice to go.
His time was two tenths slower than Turkington's previous fastest during FP1's similar conditions.
Before the BMW's had any chance to respond the red flag put pay to any further purple sectors thanks to the stricken Crabbies Focus of Jack Clarke ending FP2 earlier than scheduled.
BTCC legend Alain Menu this time ended the session in a threatening fourth only a few hundredths off the BMW's ahead.
The two MG's of Sam Tordoff and Marc Hynes were fifth and sixth but amazingly trailed Menu by over a second.
Just two tenths separated Tordoff's MG in fifth to Gordon Shedden's Honda in tenth. Marc Hynes, Andrew Foster and Nick Foster sandwiched the MG and Honda in seventh, eighth and ninth.
