BTCC championship leader Colin Turkington admits it will 'take something strange' for him to wrap up the title a round early here at Silverstone this weekend.

Turkington stands on the brink of claiming a second career BTCC title after previously winning the crown back in 2009 for BMW. Nobody since Alain Menu back during the 1997 season has won the championship with races to spare.

The WSR driver currently leads MG's Jason Plato by 54-points and needs to outscore the former double-champion by 13-points today if he wants to end the Triple Eight mans title challenge in time for Brands Hatch.

To thicken the plot, Plato and Turkington share the front row with the Triple Eight man currently topping proceedings at Silverstone, as the MG package once again looks to be the class of the field.

Turkington says he's happy to join Plato on the front row but reckons the MG6 might be difficult to overcome in pursuit of race victories.

"I didn't know what we could do to be honest. We've been fast all day but qualifying is a different ball game," Turkington told crash.net.

"I qualified P4 here last year and was hopeful we could do something similar, so to get P2 and be so close to Jason is a good day's work.

"The further you are towards the front the more you can manage the race. It's not going to be easy but I have a consistent car we can race with. I still think it's going to be very difficult to hang onto the race pace of Jason but I'll do what I can.

"It's hard to predict much. I just have to focus on what I can control, Jason will do his own thing regardless, so I'll just try and get my car over the line as close as possible to him. I don't think we can do much more, we're pretty much at the limit. We don't have to change the car too much for the race so we should be OK."

The eBay Motors driver said the aim of the game for today's three races will just be to score 'solid points', clarifying his championship mode positioning.

"It's probably not realistic to do it tomorrow it would be far too much for me to outscore Jason. This is one of their strongest tracks so for me to win it tomorrow would take something strange to happen. We'll keep the points ticking over tomorrow that will be the aim of my game."
