Aiden Moffat says he's been given a confidence boost by his Mercedes BTCC challenger after finishing third on the timesheets at the test day at Donington Park.

The 18-year-old is set for his second full season in British Touring Cars, returning with Laser Tools Racing for the new campaign. The British driver was thrilled by the Mercedes A-Class's performance after notching up a quick lap of 1m 10.300s to put him third on the day - just 0.051s off Jason Plato's timesheet topper.

"It's a great way to start the year, I think we could've gone a bit quicker if the weather hadn't changed, but we can take a lot of positives out of today," Moffat said. "The Mercedes really works with you and gives you confidence."

The young driver endured a tricky learning season in 2014 but finished the season on a high notching up two points-scoring places at the final round at Brands Hatch. The team has changed cars for the new year, ditching its Chevrolet Cruze 4DR's for Mercedes and Moffat feels the team are stronger already compared to last season.

"I think we've come a long way. We didn't do much pre-season testing last year, but we haven't made the same mistake again and we're in a much better place already," he explained. "I think initially we'll be aiming for the top ten. We have got good pace but we're not going to get too carried away just yet."

The BTCC season commences over the Easter weekend (4-6 April) at Brand Hatch.
