Hunter Abbott has joined Power Maxed Racing for the 2016 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship and will switch to Chevrolet Cruze machinery.
After the team made its debut in BTCC at the beginning of 2015, Power Maxed Racing has achieved huge strides since a change of ownership and appointment of Martin Broadhurst as Technical Director.
The team has continued its statement of intent by signing Abbott for 2016, with the British driver preparing for his third straight BTCC campaign having raced with Audi machinery for the previous two years.
A former British GT race winner, he finished runner-up in the 2008 championship competing for Rob Austin Racing in the GT4 class before making the transition into the BTCC in 2014.
Power Maxed Racing team principal Adam Weaver has welcomed Abbott with open arms and is keen for him to enjoy a breakthrough campaign after only managing a handful of points finishes in 2015.
“I have had my eye on Hunter for a while now and am looking forward to giving him a chance to shine and show his true potential,” Weaver said. “I have been a good judge of motor sport talent in the past and I see something in Hunter.
“Hunter has a great track record and we are confident that if we guide him through the switch to front-wheel drive, he will flourish in the team, turn a few heads and deliver some of his best results.
“We run a very 'open book' team approach, sharing data and set-ups as we believe that treating both drivers as equals moves the whole team forward. I am sure that by pairing him with the technical skill of the PMR team and engineers, we can help Hunter unlock his true BTCC pace.”
After two years with the rear-wheel driven Audi, Abbott is keen to repay the faith shown by Weaver in the switch to the Chevrolet and feels it is a solid package he can make progress with.
“I am very much looking forward to the new opportunities presented by PMR,” Abbott said. “I want to show the paddock what I can achieve and repay Adam's faith in my abilities. I have had two good years in the BTCC and I can't wait to get out in the Chevrolet. It will also be great to try my hand at front-wheel drive, especially as the Cruze has enjoyed such a high level of development.”
Weaver also says he is close to securing his second driver in the other PMR Chevrolet but is still speaking to a number of options and is hopeful of announcing the driver in the coming weeks.
“We are talking to some familiar faces, a multiple BTCC champion and one or two new drivers,” Weaver said. “All of them would make a great pairing with Hunter.”
