West Surrey Racing's Jack Goff has set his sights on reaching the podium on his RWD debut after salvaging eighth on the grid for the first British Touring Car Championship race of 2016 at Brands Hatch.
Goff didn't enjoy the easiest introduction to his RWD career after suffering an early spin in proceedings during the 30-minute grid defining session.
However, despite not utilising the optimum tyre strategy, Goff recovered to rescue eighth on the grid amid tricky track conditions, brought on by a prolonged period of light rain.
Had circumstances fallen Goff's way, the former MG driver believes a top-four result could well have been on the cards but was otherwise happy with his first afternoon's work in BMW colours.
"It was a little bit of our own fault really. We didn't scrub our tyres in FP2, having learnt that we should have. So the first 15 minutes of qualifying was just a case of circulating around to get a heat cycle in the tyres. By the time we put our first set of tyres on it was raining, so we were 31st with 15 minutes to go," Goff told Crash.net.
"So to come back to eighth on a damp track with one set of tyres was pretty good really.
"Sam [Tordoff] was quick last season so I've got a good benchmark. He's got a year's experience in the car. So for me to jump in a RWD car for the first time, coupled with a less than straightforward qualifying, I think we can be reasonably happy. We've just got to learn from that, push forward and see what we can do tomorrow.
"Had it been fully dry and we had another set of tyres we could have been around Sam's position. Whether we could have gone faster than that, I'm not sure. Top four would have been reasonable."
Should the warmer weather forecast materialise, Goff is hopeful his BMW 125i M Sport will thrive during the latter part of the race as the WSR driver chases his first RWD podium.
The 25-year old also anticipates the revised race two grid ruling will also help the RWD cause.
"We should be better in race trim. The RWD cars are usually better over a race distance. But I haven't done a race distance yet so it's a step into the unknown. Thankfully the team are experienced and they know what to do with the car, it's just a matter me getting out there, knowing how to deal with the tyres and look after them," Goff continued.
"The hotter conditions suit the BMW better. It helps get our tyres up to temperature quicker but it also means the FWD cars will go off a little quicker. Hotter the better for us.
"I'd love to get a podium tomorrow. That would be lovely for my first weekend in RWD. Whether or not we'll achieve, I don't know. We just need to finish all the races within the top eight. That would be a decent weekend."
