Donington Park: Podium finisher Smith revelling in team leader status

Third place finisher Aron Smith admits he didn't expect to come away from the second race with a podium finish, having previously targeted a top-six result.
BKR's Aron Smith admits he didn't expect to come away from the second British Touring Car Championship race of the day with a podium finish, having previously targeted a top-six finish at Donington Park.

Smith made the most of a ferocious battle for second up ahead of him, which involved Speedworks Motorsport's Tom Ingram locking horns with West Surrey Racing's Rob Collard and Jack Goff.

While the eventual race winner Collard made his way through with minimal fuss, Ingram's resistance against Goff allowed Smith to overtake the pair of them into the last chicane.

Smith commended Ingram and Goff for the way in which pair conducted themselves during that close three abreast exchange.

"It's really nice to get another podium. I didn't expect it actually. I was aiming for the six top-six but it just kept going my way when the others were dicing," Smith told

"Everyone was very fair during that exchange. If they decided to close the door and given me a hard time, we'd have all potentially ended the race in the fence. Hats off to them all.

"That move came off because everyone was fair. I was just able to capitalise on Goff and Ingram battling and I was able to get through. Happy it's going alright for me again."

Having not received confirmation of his place on the 2016 grid until two-weeks prior to the season kick off, Smith - who is fronting the BKR Volkswagen CC cause - admits leading the rookie squad has allowed him to mature as a driver and team leader.

"The deal to race only came together just over two weeks before the season started at Brands Hatch. Warren [Scott] put something into place that we couldn't refuse. Now I've got a two-year contract I'm just chipping away this year," the Irishman continued.

"It's actually quite nice to fly under the radar and be the team leader. I'm really enjoying it and enjoying having the crew all around me here.

"It makes you step up to another level of maturity really. You have to think of the long game. You're shaping the team. My name might be on the window but it's the other guys that are doing all the other work that gives us glory."

"I'm just the last piece of the jigsaw, without them I wouldn't be in this position."
