Reigning British Touring Car Champion Gordon Shedden was pleased to cap off an 'under the radar' weekend by helping consolidate a Honda Team Dynamics 1-2, behind Matt Neal, during race three at Donington Park.
As in Brands Hatch, Honda emerge from Donington Park with both of its drivers sitting first and second in the championship. Shedden remains within five-points of his Civic Type-R team mate having scored the same total of 35 as triple champion Neal.
An alternative soft tyre strategy from Honda saw Shedden kick off his Sunday with an eleventh place finish in race one. But the balance of power gradually shifted towards the favour of the Team Dynamics Type-R's as the race day progressed.
Shedden went on to finish fourth and second during the remaining two races, having shed the majority of his performance ballast while taking advantage of a large proportion of the field using the soft tyre in race three.
"I think you've got to take the pain somewhere on that soft tyre. For us with all the weight we had in qualifying, we just elected to take it early on in the first race. We've been a bit under the radar and we've got some stuff to work on but it was a nice way to finish the weekend with a 1-2 finish, perfect," Shedden told Crash.net.
"I think it's very difficult to get three clean, great results over the weekend. It's so close and competitive that you've got to be happy with two good races and take what comes with the other."
Honda may be sitting pretty in the lead of all three points' tables but Shedden echoed Neal's post Brands Hatch sentiments by admitting Team Dynamics must continue to strive in unlocking yet more performance out of the Type-R.
"The mixed conditions were certainly interesting and the car was good but we've definitely got to find a bit more out of it. It's very close out there but we're there and we're in the mix. We're always somewhere in the mix and that's what it might boil down to at the end of the season," the reigning champion explained.
"We're getting there with the car. Some things have been great this weekend but some things also haven't worked. But again, when you're this early in the car's development, you've got to figure these things out.
"When I say we've got things to work on, the car is still great anyway. But to win you've got to be on it absolutely all the time and that's the tricky bit."
