Oulton Park: Turkington storms to Subaru's maiden BTCC pole

Colin Turkington completes a remarkable turn of events to clinch Subaru's first ever BTCC pole just one meeting after the BMR squad's Thruxton woes.
Colin Turkington has clinched Subaru's first ever British Touring Car Championship pole position after holding onto the top spot amid a multi-car onslaught during the dying seconds of an enthralling qualifying session at Oulton Park.

Turkington's historic moment completes a remarkable reversal of fortune for the Subaru Team BMR outfit, who had to withdraw it's fleet of Levorgs from the action last time out at Thruxton.

With the high fuel pressure rail issue seemingly resolved, Subaru and Turkington took the session by the scruff of the neck, right from the off.

Jason Plato was the first of the Levorgs to set a benchmark at the front of the field but Turkington immediately trumped his team mate with a 1 minute 26.264 effort.

That lap set with well over half of the session still to go proved unbeatable as a flurry of attacks - led by another remarkable effort by BTCC rookie Daniel Lloyd in second position - wasn't enough to dismantle Turkington's ascendency.

In truth, just under four-tenths was all that could separate the entire top-ten order.

As Plato threatened for pole position, the former double champion - still achieving his best result of 2016 - eventually fell to sixth.

West Surrey Racing's Sam Tordoff was third in his BMW 125i M Sport and is joined on the second row by practice pacesetter Tom Ingram.

Ingram's qualifying received an early setback when his Toyota Avensis was side-lined for the early part of the session with a brake issue.

Reigning champion Gordon Shedden was the top factory Honda Civic Type-R effort in fifth, alongside Plato on the third row of the grid.

Triple Eight MG's Ashley Sutton once again out qualified his team mate Josh Cook in seventh and ninth while the current point's co-leader Matt Neal and BKR's Aron separated the pair in eighth ninth.
