Subaru's Jason Plato has said he entertained the possibility of executing an audacious last corner lunge around the outside of Tom Ingram and Josh Cook six laps before clinching his third British Touring Car Championship podium of the weekend at Oulton Park.

Having already scored two third place finishes during the opening two races at the Cheshire circuit, the Silverline Subaru Team BMR driver found himself perched behind an almighty battle for the final step on the podium between MG's Cook and the Toyota of Ingram.

Given the nature of the tussle between Cook and Ingram, Plato pre-rehearsed the idea of using the outside of Lodge corner for greater traction as the pair in front consistently hugged the inside line.

It was a piece of tactical foresight that paid off to brilliant effect as Plato's Subaru Levorg seized the high ground around the outside of Cook and Ingram towards the run to the line.

"I looked at that move about six laps earlier," Plato told Crash.net. "I looked at it twice and thought 'that's potentially on, I'll keep that'. Who knows the opportunity might arise and it did. To lunge around the outside of the last corner, I quite enjoyed that.

"It's the racing bit that I love. I love the racing. I love the aggression and going for gaps. That's what it's all about."

Despite what has been a difficult start to Subaru's tenure in the BTCC, Plato was optimistic of reaching the podium at Oulton Park but admitted getting three rostrum finishes surpassed his expectations.

Incidentally, that was the first time Plato has stood on the podium in all three races since driving for the Triple Eight MG squad at Rockingham 2012.

"I came to Oulton Park expecting to stand on the podium but I didn't expect to get three. On reflection, if that little incident hadn't happened in qualifying, I might have won two races because I should have been on pole," Plato continued.

"I'm pleased with three podiums. That's a fantastic result in anyone's book so I'm really chuffed."
