Snetterton: Turkington dominates first Snetterton practice

Silverline Subaru Team BMR's Colin Turkington sets a ferocious pace during the first BTCC practice to go almost 0.5s quicker than points leader Sam Tordoff at Snetterton.
Silverline Subaru Team BMR's Colin Turkington marks the beginning of the second half of the 2016 British Touring Car Championship season by setting the pace ahead of Sam Tordoff during FP1 at Snetterton.

Keen to maintain the momentum Subaru established prior to the summer break, Turkington proved the quickest of the quartet of Levorgs after setting a 1 minute 56.547 second lap around the Norfolk circuit.

The former double BTCC champion was almost 0.5s quicker than anyone else. West Surrey Racing's Tordoff was the nearest of Turkington's challengers in second while Croft winner Ashley Sutton was third fastest for the Triple Eight Racing MG outfit.

Turkington's time-topping lap was exactly 0.5s shy of his pole position record set last year behind the wheel of his Volkswagen CC.

Although Turkington found himself half-a-second up the road from anyone else, the times from second to sixth proved a much closer affair. Little over 0.2s separated Tordoff in second to BKR's Aron Smith.

Utilising the strengths of the Volkswagen CC, Smith was the fastest man in two out of the three speed traps. Only Subaru's James Cole was quicker than the Irishman through the first trap.

Incidentally, WIX Racing's Adam Morgan was 0.030s quicker than Smith and crept into the top-five as a result. The Mercedes A-Class runner was the quickest through the second sector but was outside of the top-five in the two remaining intermediates.

MG's Josh Cook was a further two-tenths back in seventh, marginally ahead of Speedworks Motorsport's Tom Ingram in eighth and Motorbase Performance's Mat Jackson in ninth.

Subaru's James Cole was the final runner to make the top-ten order in tenth.
