Snetterton: Morgan seeks to consolidate P3 starting slot

WIX Racing's Adam Morgan eyes his first rostrum finish since the final race at Thruxton after qualifying third in yesterday's session at Snetterton.
WIX Racing's Adam Morgan sets himself the aim of consolidating his best ever British Touring Car Championship qualifying run into his first podium finish since Thruxton during the opening Snetterton encounter.

The Mercedes A-Class driver came within just 0.028s of dethroning Honda's Gordon Shedden from pole position in yesterday's 30-minute session but still starts from third behind Subaru's Colin Turkington following a closely fought shootout.

Following a vibrant start to his 2016 campaign, Morgan has gone off the boil in recent rounds but says the beneficial tyre test - held at the same venue last month - has enabled the Mercedes squad the opportunity to make up lost ground in the championship.

"The last two rounds have been pretty poor, so we wanted to get back up the sharp end where we should be and make those points up," said Morgan.

“My dad came on the radio and said 'you need a 1m55.6s lap'. I could see it on my dash and thought I'd got it, but then I heard I was still P3. It's so close though and our best qualifying yet.

"It's always good to come here for that two-day tyre test. It's a massive benefit and now the car is absolutely brilliant to drive. It's still forgiving enough to let me push hard too.

"We're confident. I just need to get off the line and stay out of trouble. A podium would be lovely but overall we're looking for three good finishes and good points."

While predicting an unpredictable start to proceedings at Snetterton, the four-time BTCC winner highlights the importance of at least holding position at the start of the race.

"You never know what's going to happen in the race. Everyone's battling and defending so that bunches things up. Hopefully we'll be able to stay in the position we're starting from," Morgan continued.

"You always try and plan a start but you've just got to do it as it happens. Colin [Turkington] is RWD so theoretically he should get a good start but you never know what can happen. I just need to make sure I get off the line well and don't go backwards."
