British Touring Car Championship leader Sam Tordoff has shrugged off what looked to be a difficult qualifying session for the West Surrey Racing outfit, which has left the BMW driver in 16th ahead of race one.

The BMW 125i M Sport driver carries a five-point lead ahead of Honda's Matt Neal into the first race but will start nine places behind the lead Team Dynamics Civic Type-R.

Assessing his weekend so far, Tordoff seemed relaxed over his prospects prior to race one: "It actually wasn't such a tough day. We're twelve places higher up than we were at Rockingham, so that's good. Unfortunately, that was the pace of our car yesterday.

"We haven't got the right engine and we're running 75 kilos of ballast so circuit doesn't suit us in that respect. All I can do is beat my two team mates and hopefully progress in race one."

Far from his helping his cause, Tordoff's qualifying run received an unwanted setback after the points leader suffered a minor altercation with his WSR team mate Rob Collard.

Tordoff played down the incident for which the 27-year old received a verbal warning from the race stewards.

"It didn't really disrupt much. I was trying to get out of the way so I wouldn't ruin Jack's [Goff] lap as well but I didn't know Rob [Collard] was there and we made contact. It was just one of those things, a misunderstanding," Tordoff continued.

While recognising Honda's impressive qualifying effort, Tordoff is expecting to draw closer to Neal and Gordon Shedden as the race day evolves.

"We've just got to score as many points as we can. Whilst the Hondas done a very good job in qualifying, I'm hoping they'll come back towards us in the race. Our plan is to the shed the weight in race one and score big during two and three," said the BMW driver.

"It's not a drama. I think the TOCA powered cars in the top-ten will all come back to us when they've used the best of their tyres. I imagine their pace won't be quite as strong. It's not all doom and gloom, we can still score good points this weekend and still arrive at Brands Hatch in the championship fight."
