Silverstone: Tordoff: I intend to enjoy the finale...

Sam Tordoff leaves Silverstone having upheld his BTCC points lead but will have to fend off a titanic eight-car showdown for the title in two-weeks' time at Brands Hatch.
West Surrey Racing's Sam Tordoff still head to the Brands Hatch finale in pole position to claim this season's British Touring Car Championship title after rescuing vital points at Silverstone.

As in Rockingham, the BMW 125i M Sport driver was required to fight his way from an unfavourable qualifying session, which left him starting the first race in 16th position.

Having not made much headway for the majority of race one, Tordoff looked set to lose the championship lead but luck appeared on his side after punctures for both Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden meant the 27-year old's point's advantage remained intact.

Tordoff repeated his eleventh place finish from race one with the same result in the following race before reaching the top-six in the final encounter.

While Tordoff preserved his eleven point lead ahead of the Hondas, the remainder of the contenders slashed the gap from themselves to the BMW driver, setting up an unprecedented eight-way shootout for the title at Brands Hatch.

“If you'd told me after qualifying that I'd have increased my championship lead here, I'd have bitten your hand off," said Tordoff.

"I didn't get many points in races one and two, so in race three I had to do something, and the car was the best it had been all weekend, which gave the opportunity to attack and sixth was an OK finish.

"I've been reasonably fortunate that the closest guys to me in the championship have also had it tough today."

Refusing to succumb to the pressure, Tordoff said: "Now we go to Brands Hatch GP – my favourite circuit and one that should suit the BMW much better than Silverstone – for the finale with an 11-point lead and I intend to enjoy it."

Everyone down to Jason Plato in eighth has a mathematical chance of winning the 2016 crown, with 67 points left on the table for the Brands GP finale.
