Halfords Yuasa Racing's Matt Neal has pledged 'to throw caution to the wind' at the Brands Hatch finale in a bid to usurp British Touring Car Championship leader Sam Tordoff for the 2016 title.
Having suffered from a testing Silverstone weekend, Neal says he's got nothing to lose as the title race reaches what promises to be a thrilling crescendo next weekend around the Grand Prix layout of the infamous Kent circuit.
The former triple BTCC champion could well have entered the final weekend leading the points chase but a costly puncture in race one at Silverstone, by virtue of his altercation with Aiden Moffat, means Neal remains 13 points in arrears of West Surrey Racing's Tordoff.
Neal did recover to finish in the top-five in race three but has since fallen behind his Honda Civic Type-R team mate Gordon Shedden, who kept his title defence alive by winning the final race at Northamptonshire.
21 points cover the top-five of the championship while everyone down to Jason Plato in eighth remain in mathematical contention.
"Two laps from home in race one I was sitting pretty smug. I thought we were going to walk out of here with a healthy point's advantage but at least we're still in the hunt," said the Team Dynamics driver.
"It was the incident with Moffat which caused the puncture. It was a catch up from there on.
"I had a rough day which had promised a lot. But at least we've salvaged something in the end. [A podium] would have been easy [in races two and three]. We could have walked away with the championship lead, but it is what it is."
Heading to the finale, Neal carries the belief that the Civic Type-R will once again prove a potent weapon around the Grand Prix layout but remains mindful of the threat that BMW will also harness.
"We should be good around Brands Hatch but so will the BMWs. I guess we've got two strings to our bow now with Flash [Shedden] backing up," Neal continued.
"Neither of us have nothing to lose. We can throw caution to the wind on both accounts. It's time to roll our sleeves up.
"Sam [Tordoff] has got to carry full weight again – game on. We've just got to go there, do the best we can in qualifying and work from there really."
