Brands Hatch Grand Prix: Tordoff: It's perfect for us...

BTCC points leader Sam Tordoff negotiated what could have been a make-or-break final qualifying of 2016 in eleventh, crucially ahead of all but one of his main title rivals.
British Touring Car Championship leader Sam Tordoff believes he has created an ideal position for himself going into tomorrow's title decider after out-qualifying the majority of his closest rivals at Brands Hatch.

The final qualifying session of 2016 proved a dramatic affair after Aron Smith's red-flag incident caused chaos amid the drastically changeable conditions.

Tordoff initially came through the 30-minute shootout in eleventh but will move up a position to tenth following Tom Ingram's time being disallowed for failing a ride height check.

Crucially, the West Surrey Racing driver managed to out-qualify all but one of the remaining top-five championship order with Honda's Gordon Shedden proving the only exception ahead of the leading BMW in seventh.

"We can be really proud of what we've done. It's perfect for us. I think I've out qualified everyone apart from Shedden. I don't count the two Subarus. Out of the top-five I've beaten four of them – perfect," Tordoff told Crash.net.

"It was difficult and there was a lot at stake to go wrong but I think we can be really pleased with that and all of the championship hopefuls are around me."

The BMW 125i M Sport driver found himself down in 15th prior to the red flag but held his nerve amid the rapidly evolving conditions.

Heightening the challenge, Tordoff said different pockets of rain seemed to crop up on different of the circuit as the session went on.

"It was a difficult session for everyone. Wet-dry isn't nice for anyone because you don't know where you are with anything. It was also the first opportunity we've had to drive in the dry this weekend," Tordoff continued.

"To be honest I didn't really know where I was at any point until the end. It was more about just timing it right with the weather. The rain was coming in and changing intensity while also cropping up at different parts of the circuit.

"In the end, the best way was to keep circulating, which kept the heat in the tyres for when the track eventually improved."
