Rob Collard is in buoyant mood as the West Surrey Racing driver vows to attack right from off as he chases what has so far been an elusive maiden British Touring Car Championship crown at Brands Hatch.

Celebrating his birthday weekend, the 48-year old will start the opening race from twelfth position, directly behind his championship leading team mate Sam Tordoff and Honda's Matt Neal.

Collard's weekend initially looked to be in some jeopardy during yesterday's qualifying session after an early gear selection left the BMW driver unable to set a time prior to the red flag.

"It was looking really bad at the start of qualifying. I was sitting the in the garage with a gearbox problem and everyone had posted a time as it started to rain," Collard told

"When we finally got out I wasn't expecting much but the track dried very quickly and we salvaged P12, I'm very pleased with that.

"I feel good around the Brands GP circuit and I thought we could be around the top-ten so that was a good position for us. Looking at the data, the car is good enough for the top eight so it's just a case of hooking it all together.

"I know if I can be around P10 in qualifying, I know I've got a very good race car. Fingers crossed we can build upon this good position."

Having recovered from his early alarm, Collard now feels he's in prime position to take the battle to his team mate Tordoff with a view of also chasing Honda's Gordon Shedden down in seventh.

"I'm going to be attacking from the green light. It's going to be crucial for me to get in front of Sam [Tordoff] so I can hunt Shedden down. The car has good pace so hopefully we can push on try to hunt the Subarus down," Collard continued.

In what alone promises to be an intriguing inter-team battle with Tordoff, Collard currently sits 17 points back from his team mate.

However, should his charge not materialise, Collard has no issues in turning his attentions to helping Tordoff's title run ahead of the Hondas.

"I've said all season I'm a team player and I'll do whatever the team asks me to do. At the moment I'm still going for a championship win. If that becomes mathematically impossible then I'll help Sam."
