Colin Turkington set the pace in the second free practice session for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, which was halted early following an accident that could have brought Adam Jones' season to an early – and abrupt – end.
Having earlier caused a red flag when his Xero Competition Lexus stopped on the National Straight, Jones went off at Becketts with three minutes left on the session, the car impacting heavily with the barrier and causing extensive damage to both the front right and front rear. It remains to be seen whether or not the team is able to repair it for race day but the chances don't currently look good for the former GT racer.
When the session came to its early end, it was Turkington on top of the times with a best time of 1min 00.632secs in the Team RAC MG, good enough to edge out Tom Chilton who was the quickest of the Vauxhall drivers ahead of team-mate Fabrizio Giovanardi – the Italian posting the same time as fourth placed Gareth Howell. Matt Neal was fifth with James Thompson rounding out the top six.
For Jason Plato the session was nothing short of a disaster, with gearbox issues forcing him to spend almost the entire session watching on from the sidelines with the SEAT man failing to post a fast lap and spending much of the session watching on from the pitwall. Paul O'Neill also failed to appear as the team continued to work on he mystery problem that has seen the Thurlby Motors Astra develop a misfire, while both Chris Stockton and Darren Dowling remained in the garage after BTC Racing elected to change the gear ratios on both of its Lexus ahead of the qualifying session. With Mark Jones suffering from a problem that has led to his Lexus cutting out intermittently, it was a session to forget for the rear-wheel drive brigade.
