Colin Turkington took a dominant win in the second race of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship weekend at Oulton Park after the technical gremlins that beset SEATs challenge in the final race at Snetterton returned to haunt Jason Plato.

Turkington eventually took the flag by almost seven seconds from defending champion Fabrizio Giovanardi while fellow Vauxhall driver Tom Onslow-Cole completed the podium in a race held in hot and sweltering conditions at the Cheshire circuit.

Turkington had made the perfect start of the race to jump up to second place behind Plato from the second row of the grid, with the Northern Irishman making the most of the rear-wheel drive prowess of the BMW 320si to get ahead of both Tom Chilton and Giovanardi off the line.

Although Plato held his lead through the opening lap, it wasn't for long as he slowed coming out of the Island Hairpin on lap two, allowing Turkington to move into the lead. Indeed, Plato's team-mate Darren Turner had already returned to the pits after picking up a problem on his Leon TDi and Plato soon returned to pitlane himself. Unlike Turner, Plato would rejoin but well off the pack and he wasn't classified amongst the finishers.

Turkington now led the race from Giovanardi and Onslow-Cole, both of whom had battled ahead of Chilton who held fourth. Steven Kane was fifth having made a good start in the Motorbase BMW, while the top six was completed by Adam Jones' Team Aircool SEAT Leon.

With the battle in the middle of the pack intensifying, Kane set about challenging Chilton for fourth place and on lap six, he tried to make a move round the outside at Island. The Honda and BMW ran side-by-side down to Hislop's but Chilton was able to maintain the place as he had the inside line into the right hander. However, with the pack behind being slowed by the battling pair, Gordon Shedden found himself pushed wide in eighth place and he dropped outside the top ten.

Turkington was pulling away out front while Giovanardi and Onslow-Cole were comfortable in second and third place. Chilton wasn't able to match the pace of the cars ahead but on lap seven, he lost fourth to Kane who swept past into the position at Lodge. That left Chilton fifth ahead of Jones, while Mat Jackson was now seventh after battling ahead of Stephen Jelley – who also lost places to Neal, Shedden and Andy Jordan after being forced wide.

Chilton was soon under pressure from Jones and when the Team Aircool man made his move on lap ten, the Halfords Honda was forced wide at Hislops and forced to miss the corner. Chilton was then forced to wait for the field to stream past before rejoining the race having dropped outside the top ten.

Chilton's issue put Jackson onto the tail of Jones' SEAT and on lap eleven he took fifth place at Old Hall. Despite a series of quick laps from that point, Jackson was unable to close the gap to Kane ahead to try and make up further ground.
