Round 27: Jackson wraps up final race

Mat Jackson produced a fine drive in the final race of the weekend to take his third HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship victory of the season at Silverstone.

Despite starting down in 13th place following his crash in the second race of the day, Jackson stormed through to secure the win ahead of fellow Independent racer Adam Jones, while Fabrizio Giovanardi took third to strengthen his bid to take back-to-back titles.

Mike Jordan had started from pole in the John Guest Racing Honda Integra but lost the lead to Gordon Shedden who in turn then saw Tom Onslow-Cole move to the head of the pack by the time the field got to Brooklands for the first time. It meant the Vauxhall led the way from Shedden and Steven Kane, who had demoted Jordan Sr back down to fourth. Jason Plato held fifth, with Rob Collard in sixth.

Kane spun coming out of Copse at the start of lap two which promoted Jordan back into a podium position but he lost out to Plato who was able to take the inside line coming off the National Straight to climb into third. Further back, Jackson had climbed into the top six by the end of lap three after getting himself past Rob Collard while Jones and Giovanardi held seventh and eighth having also battled ahead of Collard's BMW.

With Shedden seemingly struggling for pace in the Halfords Honda, Plato took second from the Scot on lap four with the orange car then gradually starting a slide down the order.

By lap seven, Plato had closed onto the rear of Onslow-Cole for the lead and moved ahead of the Vauxhall, with Colin Turkington now third from Jackson, Jones and Giovanardi.

Turkington was trying to find a way past Onslow-Cole and on lap ten he took second at Becketts only for Onslow-Cole to fight back. The battle would soon end in tears however as Turkington was tipped into a spin on the following lap and dropped down to ninth. That put the Team RAC man behind Micky Doyle, who was enjoying a storming run in the old-spec InTune Honda Civic and had climbed into the top ten.

Out front, Plato continued to lead the way from Onslow-Cole while Jackson and Jones squabbled over third. Jones took the place on lap twelve only for Jackson to fight back immediately. The pair then got ahead of Onslow-Cole in quick succession and set about trying to reel in Plato.

That plan was aided when Plato started to struggle in much the same way as he had done in race two, and on lap 16 Jackson was able to just drive around the Leon TDi into the lead of the race. Jones followed suit within a matter of laps while Giovanardi also took a place on the podium, while a recovering Turkington also managed to demote the SEAT down to fifth place by the flag.

Early leader Onslow-Cole finished sixth ahead of Rob Collard, with Doyle eighth, Chilton ninth and Jelley tenth.

Shedden failed to finish in the points in eleventh, while Kane was unable to rebound from his spin and took twelfth. A tyre gamble for both Matt Neal and Darren Turner failed to pay off as both finished well down the order, the latter having pitted for a tyre change early on to take slicks on the front which proved to be the wrong call.
