The fight for the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship will go to the 30th and final race of the season after Jason Plato took victory for the second time on Finals Day at Brands Hatch, with title rivals Fabrizio Giovanardi and Colin Turkington joining him on the podium.

Plato started the race from pole position at the wheel of his Racing Silverline Chevrolet but lost out to Tom Chilton at Paddock Hill Bend as the Team Aon man was able to go around the outside into the lead.

From there, Plato was able to shadow the Ford throughout and made a forceful move at Druids on the 16th lap to get up the inside and take the lead of the race. With Chilton delayed slightly as a result, Giovanardi saw his chance to pounce, and later round the lap, was able to slide through into second having followed Plato from the start.

Turkington also found a way through into third place having battled his way through from eighth on the grid at the start. Having made up one position on the opening lap after getting ahead of Matt Neal on the opening lap, but was then delayed for a long period behind the sister Vauxhall of Andrew Jordan – who appeared at times to be weaving excessively in an attempt to keep the BMW behind.

Once released from behind the Vectra, Turkington closed on Jonny Adam and Rob Collard ahead, passing Adam on lap 13 when he ran wide at Sheene and then taking Collard on lap 16 shortly before he moved into a podium position.

Collard and Adam finished fourth and fifth, while Chilton had to settle for sixth having lost all the positions on the same lap. Paul O'Neill took seventh after another strong run in his older Honda Integra, which included a forceful move on Matt Neal – who ultimately finished eighth having dropped outside the points following contact between the pair at Druids.

Tom Onslow-Cole came through to ninth in the second Aon Focus, with Gordon Shedden rounding out the points finishers.

Martin Johnson failed to start because of an engine issue which will also rule him out of race three, while Martyn Bell was tipped into a spin by Johnny Herbert on lap one and retired. That incident also saw Matt Hamilton forced into retirement. Anthony Reid was fired off by Mat Jackson at Surtees on lap 14, with Herbert going off at Druids for the second race in succession on lap 16.
